TUTANKHAMUN’S TOMB 100TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATED WITH PREMIERE PROGRAMMING

New series investigates deaths linked to Tutankhamun’s tomb and

uncovers new insights, exclusively on National Geographic

King Tutankhamen, or King Tut as he is more commonly known today, was relatively unknown to the world until 1922, when his tomb was discovered by Howard Carter. Now, 100 years later, this unprecedented historic discovery will be commemorated with the premiere of Tut’s Toxic Tomb on National Geographic (DStv 181, Starsat 220) on Fridays at 19:00 (CAT), from 18 November 2022, as well as with fascinating library programming exploring various facets of the renowned pharoah’s life.

On 26th November 1922, Howard Carter made what was dubbed as the greatest archaeological find of all time – entering the treasure-filled tomb of the Egyptian boy king Tutankhamun. Tutankhamun’s tomb contained thousands of artifacts, a sarcophagus containing his mummy, and a now-famous headdress. It took Carter and his team almost ten years to catalogue the contents of the tomb. The over five thousand artifacts and well-preserved mummies found in the tomb have since brought new insights into life in ancient Egypt and the astounding governance of the boy who became king.

The news lit up the world. But when people who entered the tomb began dying, tales of a “pharaoh’s curse” spread. Were the deaths just coincidences or stories created to sell newspapers? And can modern science explain the truth behind the legend?

In the two-part Tut’s Toxic Tomb series, paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi begins to unravel the extraordinary, scientific truth behind the legend and dives deeper into the mystery behind the Tutankhamun curse story. Exploring potential toxins inside the tomb and on some of the artefacts, she questions whether science can help explain some of the deaths that were linked to the tomb. On her journey, she shines fresh light on this global legend and reveals the greater legacy of Howard Carter’s discovery.

Additionally, viewers can enjoy King Tut In Color (4 November at 19:00) in which the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb is revealed for the first time in colour, thanks to colourisation of black-and-white newsreel and photographs.

In Tut’s Treasures: Hidden Secrets (11 November at 19:00), follow how Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 made headlines across the world, sparking a global frenzy for ancient Egypt. Watch as the boy-king’s 5,398 priceless objects are being reunited for the first time.

ZWAKALA MZANSI AND CELEBRATEHERITAGE – TASTIC HERITAGEFESTIVAL

South African rice brand Tastic announced in September that Mzansi’s music icon Thandiswa Mazwai will be spreading the spirit of true generosity on the massive Tastic stage alongside Boom Shaka, Zoë Modiga, the incredible Dr. Rebecca Malope, Black Motion, Thebe, The Soil, Trompies, Prince Kaybee, Ihhashi Elimhlophe, PJ Powers, and many more as they headline the first-ever Tastic Heritage Festival to be held on Saturday, 5 November 2022 at Imperial Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

The Tastic brand has been campaigning for an end to education inadequacy by uniting true generosity voices, amplified by Mzansi’s icons, encouraging South Africans to take action in the mission to provide quality education to as many South African students as possible. This year, Tastic will unite artists and nationals to celebrate their heritage while demonstrating their true generosity by raising funds to end education inadequacy.

“The realities of today’s economic climate make it difficult for the underprivileged to ensure they gain access to funds that will allow their young ones an opportunity to quality education. Tiger brands is committed to making an impactful difference in tackling this socio-economic challenge by contributing towards the development and education of our future leaders. We are proud of the great work that Tastic has done to mobilise South African artists, leaders, and nationals to work together in celebrating our heritage and raising funds for our bursary program,” says Thembi Sehloho, Marketing Director of Pasta and Rice

“This significant event not only honours the legacy of our great heritage and creativity but offers an important and powerful platform for us to make a positive and tangible contribution to our youth by raising educational funds. I am truly honoured to be this year’s anchor for the Tastic heritage campaign and hope it truly inspires creatives, the youth, and our leaders to take action in South African efforts to achieve tomorrow that is sustainable for every South African to live in.” says Thandiswa Mazwai.

The Tastic Heritage Festival 2022, which calls to raise funds to support South African students in their educational journey – will take place on 05 November 2022 at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium. J’SOMETHING GOES BIGGER FOR INDOOR DURBAN

Following a successful ‘Indoor’ Cape Town tour last month, award winning musician J’Something this week confirmed the Durban leg of the tour has been moved to a bigger venue.

The exclusive ‘Indoor with J’Something’ experience kicked off in the mother city last month at The HCC Homecoming Centre. This first-of-its-kind tour featured J alongside his 3 piece band performing a full-length show. Upon announcement of tickets sales opening, the Durban tour sold out in just over 24 hours.

“INDOOR is very close to my heart so I am truly overwhelmed by the support South Africa at large has given me thus far. We simply wanted to share the music with the world and really didn’t expect such incredible support. Following tons of queries and pleas from supporters across KZN to do an additional show, moving to a bigger venue just made the most sense. stated J’Something.

RUBICON TO DEBUT THEIR LATEST COUTURE COLLECTION AT SA FASHION WEEK

With South Africa Fashion Week almost upon us, excitement is building at the House of Rubicon, who are set to launch their latest collection this Thursday.

As with the previous showcase in 2021, the AW’23 season collection is heavily inspired by the late Dickson Ralushai, father to founder of Rubicon Hangwani Nengovhela. The collection pays homage to her father’s endless signature of strength and perseverance.

In addition this year’s theme is underlined by the flow of water. There is no denying there is something truly fascinating and powerful about the way water flows, without being compromised by rocks or any other obstacles that hinders it’s path. So too is the new collection entitled Mahovhohovho:- a flowing and serene yet powerful and enchanting waterfall.

‘The past two and half years have been a true testament to our resilience and persistence in an almost non-operational industry. This year’s AW’23 collection is inspired by the power and strength that we possess. And just like still waters we never compromise our form but rather adapt to any trials and tribulations that come our way. The new collection will interpret the way in which water flows smoothly whilst never losing its formation, but rather adapting to the different streams that may come it’s way’ stated founder and lead designer of Rubicon, Hangwani Nengovhela.

Descended from Venda heritage, Hangwani and her Rubicon brand have always drawn inspiration from her homeland. Aligning with the classic elegance that is the image of Rubicon, the new collection will mimic the different flows of water, specifically taking reference to the majestic Phiphidi Waterfall in the northern part of the Limpopo province of South Africa.

In alignment with the theme of the collection, music by Limpopo’s own legendary musical genius L‘Wei Ntshivehale will be played during the live showcase.

With over 20 years built on high end fashion, Rubicon is a forerunner in uplifting women across the country and have proven time and time again that in order to stay on top of the fashion world, quality is highly imperative and is the true art of fashion. Hence the brand spans longstanding relations with loyal clients for over 20 years or more.

AND THE 2022 FEATHER AWARDS NOMINEES ARE….

The highly anticipated Feather Awards is almost upon us and earlier today the colourful list of 2022 nominees were announced following the hoisting of the Pride flag at the home of human rights Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.

The intimate affair boasted speakers including this year’s Award hosts the Modiselle sisters, Refilwe, Bontle and Candice, Thami Dish as well as the reigning Miss South Africa Ndavi Nokeri alongside Miss SA CEO Stephanie Courtney- Weil. Other speakers included Dr Dulcy Rakumakoe, Constitutional Hill’s Janine Muthusamy and Dawn Robertson, Zingisa Jemsana – COO of Market Theatre, PFSAQ’s Linah Ngwenya, Fundi Ndaba from FEW and Sign language activist Andiswa Gebashe.

The awards return to the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and set to take place on Thursday, 10th November 2022.

Category nominees which comprised of individuals and organisations from both the private and business sectors are selected by a knowledgeable panel consisting of members of the media and entertainment industry, who are firmly in touch with what’s hot and what’s not on the South African social circuit.

Each nominated individual, organisation or brand, have in one way or the other either represented, inspired, or celebrated the LGBTIQ+ community with excellence and distinction over the past twelve months. These nominees are selected from industries across lifestyle (entertainment, arts and sports), politics and even business.

The Feathers Awards, now in it’s 14th year is done in partnership with the Thami Dish Foundation who focus on desensitising the LGBTIQ community to the public at large, via the LGBTIQ+ Dialogues, Workshop and Trainings done in communities across South Africa.

“There is still much work to be done. COVID19 slowed down the process and now it’s time to accelerate the transformation and get back on track. And it’s going to take all of us to do it. From the public sector and the private sector, government and businesses need to put their money where their mouths are” commented Thami Kotlolo, co-founder of the Feather Awards. ‘Inclusivity is not about celebrating the community for a few days in a year. Government and corporates need to support the community, get involved in programmes and initiatives 365 days of the year, not just in June or October when the exercise of ticking boxes needs to happens. We, the queer community, are unfvcken apologetic about being heard, being seen, being recognised and been included. This doesn’t take away from organisations who offer unwavering support for the community. We see you and value your support. To all the nominees best of luck for the upcoming awards next month.
